About

The Institute of Medical Science Students’ Association (IMSSA) represents the interests of graduate students at the Institute of Medical Science (IMS). IMSSA engages graduate students, staff and faculty of the IMS, with our primary mission being to promote the well-being and professional development of our student body.

The IMSSA Executive is an elected body that represents students’ views and interests by participating in the standing committees of the IMS, and organizes various academic and social events throughout the year. The IMSSA Executive meets regularly to plan events and discuss issues of relevance to students. In addition, each member of the Executive fulfills certain specific duties. We invite you to read our constitution for more details!

All students registered in the Institute of Medical Science are general members of IMSSA.

What does IMSSA do?

IMSSA hosts a variety of extracurricular events, workshops, and activities to engage graduate students at IMS beyond the clinic and research environment. Our activities are organized by one of our 6 subcommittees:

  1. Wellness & Wellbeing
  2. Sporting Events
  3. Academic Affairs
  4. Social Events
  5. Community & Outreach
  6. Equity, Diversity, Inclusion (EDI)

How can I get involved?

There is room on IMSSA’s executive and subcommittees for every kind of student! All IMS students are welcome to join any of our six IMSSA subcommittees.

General elections are held in September for executive positions. See our constitution for a list of roles.

If you want to join a subcommittee, please email a Subcommittee Director. Click on the Contact tab for a list of our Subcommittee Director emails.

Will IMSSA appear on my CCR?

Your involvement with IMSSA will appear on your co-curricular record (CCR) when at least one of the following conditions are met:

  • You are a Co-President, Vice-President, on our Communications Team, or Treasurer
  • You are a Subcommittee Director or Officer
  • You are general member/Site Director/Representative on at least 2 IMSSA subcommittees

In addition, you must also complete EDI training (contact an executive for more information).

When does IMSSA meet?

IMSSA meets monthly at our general meetings. See below for a list of dates.

As a registered IMS student, you are automatically a general member of IMSSA. Therefore, you are invited to attend our general meetings.

If you are a member of a subcommittee, you are required to attend your subcommittee meetings which happen on a biweekly basis (every 2 weeks). The exact time of the dates and times are determined by your subcommittee director at the beginning of the academic year.

What happens at general meetings?

Our executive team will provide updates on the events they have planned! We invite everyone to ask questions and raise their concerns.

General meetings are also a great way to network, make new friends, and unwind from graduate life. We hope you’ll join us at our next meeting!
