Speaker’s Short Bio:
Dr. Andresa Marinho Buzelli (she/her) is currently a Research Associate at St. John’s Rehab Research Program – Sunnybrook Research Institute. Andresa’s most recent research project aimed to optimize the uptake of aquatic therapy for post-stroke through a participatory design approach. Andresa led a multidisciplinary team of stroke stakeholders to co-design the Stroke Toolkit for Aquatic Rehabilitation and Recreation Therapy (STARRT, www.starrt.ca), which is an initial education and information guide to facilitate access to aquatic therapy post-stroke. During her post-doctoral research at KITE-UHN, Andresa investigated the knowledge, perceptions and current practice of rehabilitation professionals using aquatic therapy for individuals with a spinal cord injury. In her doctoral thesis at Rehabilitation Sciences Institute – University of Toronto, Andresa studied how the aquatic environment influences postural control of able-bodied individuals and individuals with a spinal cord injury. Andresa’s long-term research goal is to continue developing optimal and feasible aquatic therapy approaches and education tools for the rehabilitation of balance, mobility and function of individuals with lived experience of a disability.
